This week’s story features William Morgan from a former University of Chicago Graduate Student.

In 1991, when I was a graduate student at Yerkes, I had an office on the upper floor in the north tower. There’s a creaky staircase leading from the main floor to where that office was along with two other offices, with no access to anywhere else. This staircase was just past a staircase that does go from the main floor to the upper floor.

One afternoon I was at my desk, and I heard someone slowly coming up the stairs. To my surprise, it was William Morgan. When he got to the top of the stairs he said “I can’t get there from here, can I? You would think that after 65 years here I would know that.”

Morgan was associated with Yerkes from 1926 until his death in 1994.
