Alt Text Style Guide

What is alt text? What is an image description?

Alt text, short for alternative text, is a description of the content of an image. It allows blind or low- vision people to access information from images. Alt text is read aloud by screen readers and is usually not visible to sighted readers.

Alt text is customarily one or two sentences long. Because of its function as an educational resource, however, alt text for curricula is often much longer than the alt text appropriate for articles or blogs. This longer and more descriptive form of alt text is sometimes called an image description.

In the context of astronomical curricula, image description ensures that blind or low vision students can fully understand course content, contribute to class discussions, and feel the excitement and wonder inherent in scientific study.

This guide exists as a resource for writing image descriptions for astronomical curricula, though the information is widely applicable across all STEM fields.
